Pennsylvania is a picturesque landscape, rolling hills with lush grasses and crops, farms with windmills dotting the horizon and horse and buggies sharing the road. Lancaster County has the most covered bridges in Pennsylvania with 29 covered bridges. In the early to late 1800s there were approximately 1,500 covered bridges in the state of Pennsylvania. That number has decreased to just over 200 bridges, most of them are located in Lancaster County. So we have many old beautiful bridges: Mercer’s Mill Covered Bridge was built in 1880 and located just south of Christiania, is one of the only two remaining bridges shared with Chester County. The next bridge is the Pine Grove Covered Bridge, the only double-span, double-arch bridge in use in Lancaster County, at 204 feet. Originally built in 1816, it was later rebuilt in 1846 and 1884 because it was destroyed by flood water. The next bridge is the White Rock Forge Covered Bridge. It is the second oldest covered bridge in Lancaster County still open to traffic, was originally built in 1847 and rebuilt in 1884. In its long history, this Lancaster covered bridge has been washed away and rebuilt twice. It not far we can see the Jackson’s Sawmill Covered Bridge. This bridge was built in 1878, but was destroyed by a flood in 1988. The county rebuilt the bridge and raised it an additional three feet to keep safe from future floods. These bridges were reiterated in the movie "The Bridges of Madison County".
