Nemours Mansion & Gardens in Wilmington is a French-style country estate inspired by the Palace of Versailles. The focal point is a five-story mansion with more than 70 rooms, and outside a garden featuring flora, fine art, fountains and an elaborate pool stretches one-third of a mile. It is all part of the du Pont family’s rich history, and each has its own personality and tale to tell. The estate has the most developed and largest jardin à la française (French formal garden) style landscape park and collection of individual gardens in North America. Nemours was created by Alfred I. du Pont in 1909–1910 as a gift for his second wife, Alicia, and named for the north central French town affiliated with his great-great-grandfather. DuPont is one of the largest chemical companies in the world, was founded in June 1802 years and involved in the production of black powder. The company grew near Wilmington in the US state of Delaware. DuPont developed throughout the nineteenth century, investing in the chemical industry. The golden era of this concern there was in the twentieth century, when its scientists were the first to have produced materials such as nylon, Teflon and Kevlar. DuPont was also one of the leaders of the revolution in polymer materials.
