Mezquita de Córdoba - Pearl of the architecture of the former, monument inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Great Mosque of Cordoba (La Mezquita) is now used as a Roman Catholic cathedral of the Diocese of Córdoba. He stood on the site of the church of Saint Vincent which was built by the Visigoths (sixth century) who prevailing before the Arab invasion of the Iberian Peninsula in the eighth century. Cordoba was experiencing its golden age under the Arabs and with this card history involves local architectural wonder. In the thirteenth century mosque turned into a cathedral. After the conquest of the Spaniards the Gothic cathedral was erected in the middle of mosque. La Mezquita is one of the most famous mosques in the world, mainly thanks to the famous pillared hall. The former is the largest mosque in Europe, its area is approx. 23,000 m². The mosque is vast but relatively flat, while standing in the middle of the Gothic cathedral is three times higher. The result is that looking at the Cathedral from the outside, the eye gets only the Gothic part of the church, but when you’re in the middle you can walk for an hour after the Grand Mosque without noticing Roman Catholic Cathedral.
