The first mention of a new settlement Nowe Miasto Lubawskie dates from 1325. In 1353 the settlement was given municipal rights. In the fourteenth century a church was built, and the Knights had built around the city walls. This gothic church was dating from the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries. The chancel was completed in 1330. The aisles were built after 1350. Among the equipment of the late Gothic triptych from half of the sixteenth century and the main altar made about 1630. There is Gothic gravestone of Kunon von Liebenstein (1391) and the Renaissance tomb of Nicholas Dzialynski (1604), the governor of Chelmno. Very rare is the banner of mourning Paul John Dzialynski (1643), trace old Polish custom once prevalent. Since 1971 the church has the status of a minor basilica. On 25 March 2012 the church received the dignity of collegiate church.
