Sanok (in full The Royal Free City of Sanok - Polish: Królewskie Wolne Miasto Sanok) is a town in the Podkarpackie region. The city was founded in 1339 by Prince George, on the Magdeburg Law. It was located on the crossroads of trade routes to Russia and Hungary. The present market square plan was mapped out by the Austrian authorities after the reconstruction of the city in 1786. The square fairs were held, and the houses around the market were created in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. The first town hall in Sanok was made of wood and burned down in 1680. Its foundations were discovered during archeological excavations carried out in the Market Square during its reconstruction. After laying new pavement outlining the fundamentals of the dice marked in a different color than the surrounding surface. In the eastern part of the market’s you can see current eclectic Town Hall which was built at the turn of the century, in subsequent years, many times rebuilt. In the western part of the market in the former building of the district council dating from 1870 now houses the office of the municipal council and the Mayor of Sanok and next to the district office in a building built in the years 1965 to 1967 last year. On the market there are many historic buildings, the church of the Franciscan monuments.
