Sveti Stefan is a small islet and hotel resort in Montenegro, circa 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) southeast of Budva. Once an island, connected to the mainland by a causeway, molded during the tides. In the past, Sveti Stefan was a fishing village, but since the 50s of the last century residents who were engaged in fishing or extruding oil, were relocated inland. The island village became an exclusive resort frequented by high profile elites of the world. In the highest part of the island stands the church of St. Stephen from the fifteenth century. The whole is surrounded by walls from the middle of the previous millennium. It’s a small island with well-preserved buildings, even partially derived from the fifteenth century. Once a haven for pirates, later a fortress inhabited by twelve families, now it is in fact one big, upscale hotel. Incredibly spectacular views, a special place, which is one of the biggest attractions of Montenegro.
