In 1942, the USAT Liberty, a United States military cargo ship, was torpedoed by the Japanese while stationed off the strait of Lombok. Damaged, the Unites States towed the ship towards Bali, hoping to make it to the northern region of Singaraja, but the ship began to break apart and instead was beached onto the shore of Tulamben. In 1963, the earthquakes caused by the volcanic eruption of Mount Agung pushed the ship into the sea where it sank onto its side and was forgotten until the early 1980’s. From this time the USAT Liberty Wreck is the most famous dive site in Bali. The wreck is about 130 m long with the shallowest part at about 5 m deep and the deepest on the other side of the wreck at about 30 m deep. The ship wreck looks wonderful under the water and you can look at the beautiful marine life. A view unforgettable, also go diving at night, which provides additional experience.
